Singapore Intensifies Vape Enforcement on Public Transport
Singapore has launched an intensified enforcement blitz against vaping on its public transport network, resulting in more than 60 individuals being caught for possessing or using e-vaporizers in the past six weeks. The initiative, which began in August 2025, is part of a broader nationwide crackdown on vaping, which Prime Minister Wong recently stated would be treated as a drug issue.
Officers from the Land Transport Authority (LTA), public transport operators, and station security are now empowered to conduct random bag checks and utilize X-ray and metal detectors at high-traffic MRT stations and bus interchanges. Frontline staff can confiscate vapes on the spot. Officers equipped with body cameras are documenting interactions, with footage provided to police for uncooperative individuals.
Detailed Vaping Penalties on Public Transport
The stricter penalties fall under the Tobacco (Control of Advertisement and Sales) Act and, in some cases, the Misuse of Drugs Act. Offenders face a range of consequences:
- Possession or Use: Individuals caught possessing or using an e-vaporizer can face an immediate on-the-spot fine of up to $2,000.
- Repeat Offenses: Recurring offenders may be referred for mandatory rehabilitation programs.
- Vapes with Harmful Substances: Vapes found to contain illicit substances like etomidate will be prosecuted under stricter drug laws.
- Foreign Nationals: For repeated or serious vaping offenses, foreign nationals may face permit revocation or deportation.
This anti-vaping campaign is a collaborative effort between the LTA, Health Science Authority (HSA), and public transport operators to both enforce the law and educate the public. Commuters are strongly urged to dispose of any vapes in designated bins before entering stations or bus interchanges to avoid these penalties.
