Macau Considers Full Ban on E-Cigarette Possession
The government of Macau is exploring a full ban on the possession of e-cigarettes, a move that would significantly tighten its already strict tobacco control laws. While the manufacturing, sale, and import of vapes are already prohibited, the Health Bureau is now studying this further restriction in response to strong public feedback favoring stricter regulations.
Lam Chong, head of the bureau’s tobacco control office, also revealed plans to establish designated smoking zones in high-traffic areas on a one-year trial basis. This initiative aims to combat “locomotive” smokers (those who walk and smoke simultaneously). Potential pilot locations include tourist hotspots like the Ruins of St. Paul’s and the Border Gate Square. The trial will initially focus on public education before any penalties are introduced.
This consideration comes amid rising concerns over youth vaping. Tam Tik-sang of the Bosco Youth Service Network noted that e-cigarette use among Macau students has now surpassed traditional smoking. Au Ka Fai of the Quit Smoking and Health Promotion Society also cited reports from parents and teachers about students bringing vapes to school.
