Paraguay Imposes Heavy Fines for Vaping While Driving
The Paraguayan Highway Patrol has classified vaping, smoking, and drinking traditional beverages like tereré while driving as serious traffic offenses. Drivers caught with an e-cigarette in hand face steep fines ranging from 6 to 10 minimum daily wages for distracted driving.
Keeping both hands on the steering wheel is no longer just a suggestion on Paraguay’s national routes. Inspector Patricia Ferreira, representing the Patrulla Caminera, recently clarified that any distraction preventing a two-handed grip is a strictly punishable offense. This explicitly targets nicotine consumers. Ferreira noted that spotting a driver holding a combustible cigarette or a vape device is one of the easiest violations for traffic officers to verify on the road.
The financial penalty hits hard. Fines span between 6 and 10 minimum daily wages. The regulatory crackdown extends well beyond e-liquids and tobacco to cultural staples. Drinking tereré or mate behind the wheel carries the exact same penalty, though officials suggest having a passenger serve the beverage to avoid the fine.
The highway patrol also issued broader safety mandates. Ride-share drivers must use hands-free systems for their mobile devices to avoid similar distraction penalties. While federal law doesn’t strictly prohibit driving barefoot or in sandals, Ferreira advised motorists to check local municipal ordinances. Finally, officials reminded commercial trucks hauling loose materials like sand or stone to securely tarp their loads, urging passenger vehicles to maintain a safe following distance to reduce accident risks.
