Romania: City of Iași to Ban Public Smoking & Vaping
The city of Iași is set to become the second major city in Romania to restrict smoking and vaping in certain public spaces, following a similar move by Cluj. The Iași City Hall has prepared a draft resolution that aims to prohibit these activities to protect public health.
The proposed ban will cover all forms of smoking, including e-cigarettes (vaping), in the following locations: public transport stations, children’s playgrounds, and sports grounds and facilities. In some recreational areas, such as parks, public pools, and green spaces, smoking and vaping will only be permitted in specially designated and marked areas.
After the resolution is adopted, the city will have 60 days to properly mark these smoke-free zones with large signs displaying the “No Smoking” message and the corresponding international symbol. Individuals who do not comply with the new rules will face fines ranging from 100 to 500 lei. The project is currently in a 10-day public consultation period, with a final decision expected at the end of August or the beginning of September.
