San Fernando, Philippines Enforces Public Smoking & Vaping Ban
The city government of San Fernando in the Philippines has announced the re-implementation of its comprehensive no-smoking policy, Ordinance No. 2014-007, which strictly prohibits both smoking and vaping in public places. The measure aims to protect public health from the harmful effects of tobacco and e-cigarette use.
The ban covers all public buildings, offices, and forms of public transportation, including jeepneys, buses, and tricycles. Furthermore, the ordinance prohibits the sale and advertising of cigarettes, other tobacco products, and e-cigarettes within a 100-meter radius of schools, public playgrounds, health facilities, churches, and other areas frequented by minors. Sales of these products to minors are strictly forbidden.
Penalties for non-compliance are significant. Individuals caught violating the public smoking or vaping ban will face a P2,500 fine and be required to perform community service. Establishments that violate the ordinance, such as by selling to minors, face even harsher consequences, including a P5,000 fine and potential imprisonment of up to one year. The city’s anti-smoking drive, “Bantay-Usok Sigarilyo,” seeks to reduce public exposure to these products and create a healthier environment for all constituents.
