Switzerland Geneva Lawmakers Propose Bill to Ban Disposable E-Cigarettes
Following in the footsteps of Jura and Valais, the canton of Geneva may soon ban the sale of disposable e-cigarettes, commonly known as “vapes”, “puffs.” Two members of the Grand Council, Louise Trottet (Green Party) and Raphaël Dunand (Libertés et Justice Sociale), have introduced a bill on Saturday to prohibit these products.
The issue of a total ban on puffs is also being debated at the federal level. The National Council approved a motion last year to prohibit these products, and the Council of States is set to address the topic in March.
However, Louise Trottet does not want to wait for Bern to take a stance. She argues that cantons can act much more quickly, noting that France, Belgium, and Germany have already banned single-use e-cigarettes at the European level.
As the debate surrounding the regulation of puffs continues, lawmakers in Geneva and across Switzerland will need to carefully consider the balance between public health, environmental concerns, and individual freedoms.
