Mexico: Tlaxcala Certifies 16 Parks as 100% Smoke & Vape-Free
The state government of Tlaxcala, Mexico, through its Commission for Protection Against Sanitary Risks (Coeprist), has officially certified 16 public parks as “100% Tobacco Smoke and Emissions Free Spaces” for the first time. This initiative aims to protect public health by guaranteeing environments free from tobacco smoke, vapes, and similar products.
Under this new measure, smoking and vaping are now restricted in parks across the following municipalities:
- Tlaxcala
- Chiautempan
- Huamantla
- Zacatelco
- Apizaco
- Nanacamilpa
- Ayometla
- Axocomanitla
- Tocatlán
- Zacualpan
- Ixtenco
- Tlaxco
The certification also extends to green areas of community presidencies and Basic Rehabilitation Units in select locations. Additionally, institutional and business spaces, such as the Secretariat of Economic Development (Sedeco) and companies like Lear Mexican Trim Operation, received certification.
Mónica YazmÃn Jiménez Gutiérrez, head of Coeprist, emphasized that this initiative aligns with federal and state policies to prevent involuntary exposure to tobacco smoke and vape emissions. She noted that this is just the first stage, with plans to expand certification to more public parks and community areas in coordination with local councils. Municipalities will be responsible for monitoring compliance and promoting these smoke-free environments.
