Ukraine Doctors Warn: 20% of Teens Use E-Cigarettes
Medical experts in Ukraine are sounding the alarm over a sharp increase in the consumption of tobacco and nicotine products among children and teenagers. Otto Stoika, a public health expert at the Kyiv City Center for Disease Control and Prevention, reports that children have become the primary consumers of new products like electronic cigarettes, heated tobacco devices, and nicotine pouches.
According to Stoika, statistics show a concerning shift: 20% of children now use electronic cigarettes, surpassing the 18% who smoke traditional cigarettes. The appeal of these products often lies in their lack of strong odor and ease of concealment, which facilitates rapid addiction. Nicotine pouches are also a growing threat, with 3% of children using them compared to only 0.3% of adults.
Doctors are increasingly treating cases of toxic nicotine poisoning in minors due to uncontrolled use. Stoika highlighted that laboratory studies have found the actual nicotine content in these products often significantly exceeds manufacturer claims, sometimes reaching levels equivalent to more than two packs of cigarettes in a single pouch. This surge in high-potency nicotine use among youth poses a critical public health challenge.
