US Attorneys General Urge Shopify to Halt Illegal Vape Sales
A coalition of 25 state attorneys general, led by California’s Rob Bonta, has formally requested Shopify to stop hosting websites that sell illegal vaping products. In a letter sent Monday, officials from states including Illinois and Arizona, alongside authorities from New York and D.C., urged the e-commerce platform to cut ties with merchants lacking necessary licenses or violating U.S. laws.
While the FDA has authorized only 39 e-cigarette products, the U.S. market remains flooded with unauthorized, often flavored disposable vapes, primarily from China. “By addressing unlawful e-cigarette sales at their point of origin, we can make progress faster,” Bonta stated. The coalition acknowledged Shopify’s previous removal of some sellers but called for a “more comprehensive solution” to address public health risks.
This action is part of a broader crackdown on the unregulated vape industry, following recent federal raids, tariffs on Chinese imports, and U.S. Postal Service blocks on key distributors. The attorneys general plan to seek similar agreements with other web hosting providers.
