Poll: Only 10% Back Irish Nicotine Pouch Restrictions
A new poll commissioned by the campaign group We Vape reveals low public support for the Irish government’s stringent restrictions on nicotine pouches. The survey of 1,038 adults found that fewer than 10% support banning the sale of these products, while over 44% believe they should be regulated rather than prohibited. This comes as Ireland moves to ban disposable vapes and tighten rules on pouch packaging, flavors, and sales to minors.
The findings suggest a preference for harm reduction strategies over bans. More than 30% of respondents believe stop-smoking services should recommend nicotine pouches alongside vapes, and nearly 56% favored sensible strength limits, aligning with We Vape’s call for a 20mg cap. We Vape argues that the Irish government’s approach risks penalizing adult smokers trying to quit and could drive them back to cigarettes or towards the black market.
Richard Crosby, UK director of Considerate Pouchers, stated, “Our poll shows a clear public preference for practical harm reduction measures, not arbitrary bans.” He warned that Ireland’s policy might hinder cessation attempts rather than protect youth. Mark Oates, founder of We Vape, added that targeting proven cessation tools like pouches and vapes is “madness” and could lead to stagnant smoking reduction rates. The group urges the Irish government to reconsider its approach and prioritize effective quitting options.
