US Seizes Over 2Million Unauthorized Vapes in Nationwide Raids
The U.S. Department of Justice and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have announced the seizure of more than 2.1 million flavored e-cigarettes in a series of coordinated raids across seven states. This major operation is part of an intensified crackdown on unauthorized vaping products that are being sold without the required premarket authorization from the FDA.
The products were confiscated from five distributors and six retailers who had previously received warning letters from the FDA. According to court filings, agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) conducted undercover purchases and inspections which confirmed that the companies continued to distribute the illegal products. Attorney General Pamela Bondi stated that many of the seized vapes were smuggled in from China and marketed near schools and military bases, calling it a “national security issue” and promising further prosecutions.
The targeted companies include Tampa Vapor in Florida, Smoke House Sunset in California, and D&A Distribution in Georgia, among others. U.S. Attorney Andrew Boutros in Illinois noted the raids targeted “millions in illicit products” that posed risks to children. In addition to the seizures, the Justice Department has filed civil injunctions to prevent the companies and their owners from resuming sales of these adulterated and misbranded vapes. Under federal law, all new tobacco products, including e-cigarettes, must undergo FDA review and receive authorization before being legally marketed in the U.S.
