Western Australia Enacts Strict Vape Laws with $21M Fines
Western Australian authorities have officially enacted sweeping new tobacco and vaping laws. Driven by the urgent need to protect children and young people from health risks, the legislation drastically increases penalties for the illegal sale, supply, and possession of illicit products.
To combat the black market, the Department of Health has significantly boosted its compliance and enforcement capacity across the state. Health officials now possess stronger powers, including the authority to immediately close premises found storing or supplying illegal vapes and tobacco.
The reforms are strictly aimed at illicit operations. Legitimate tobacco sellers who hold a valid license and comply with all legal requirements will not be affected by the crackdown.
Furthermore, the new laws address environmental health concerns by mandating that all current smoke-free public spaces also become vape-free zones, effectively reducing community exposure to second-hand emissions.
The government is urging the community to assist in these enforcement efforts. Residents are encouraged to report any suspected illegal sales directly to the Department of Health or anonymously through Crime Stoppers.
