Netherlands Cigarette Prices Hit ~€11.10 After Tax Increase
The price of a 20-cigarette pack in the Netherlands has risen to approximately €11.10, following an almost €1 increase in April due to government measures aimed at discouraging smoking. Similarly, a packet of rolling tobacco saw a €3.60 price jump to around €24. These increases reflect a significant tax component, with around €7.81 per cigarette pack now attributed to taxes, according to finance ministry figures.
Further price hikes are anticipated as the Dutch government continues its efforts to reduce smoking rates. Despite steady price increases over the years, researchers note that rising wages have meant tobacco products have only become marginally more expensive in real terms for consumers. A Maastricht University study from three years prior indicated that cost only becomes a significant deterrent for many smokers when prices reach exceptionally high levels, with 50% stating they would only consider quitting if a pack cost €60.
Currently, about 20% of the Dutch population smokes regularly. The government established a target in 2018 aiming to reduce this figure to just 5% by the year 2040.
