CAPHRA: Families Benefit When Smokers Switch to Smoke-Free Vapes
The Coalition of Asia Pacific Tobacco Harm Reduction Advocates (CAPHRA) has highlighted a groundbreaking five-country survey revealing that transitioning from cigarettes to smoke-free nicotine alternatives significantly improves household well-being. Released ahead of World Vape Day, the findings shift the tobacco harm reduction debate from an individual struggle to a collective family success.
The survey gathered insights from more than 4,000 partners, friends, and family members of former smokers in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, France, and Japan. Rather than focusing on the smokers themselves, the study investigated how the lives of those living with them changed after cigarettes were replaced with lower-risk alternatives.
Respondents reported immediate, tangible benefits at home, including:
- Drastically reduced exposure to secondhand smoke.
- Noticeable improvements in daily shared living conditions.
- An overall boost in the household’s quality of life.
Nancy Loucas, CAPHRA Executive Coordinator, emphasized that this social dimension is frequently ignored in regulatory discussions. “When someone quits cigarettes, the whole household often feels the difference,” Loucas stated. “Tobacco harm reduction is not just a smoker’s story. It is a family story.”
Clarisse Virgino of CAPHRA Philippines echoed this sentiment, urging policymakers to look beyond institutional debates and listen to direct family observations. As World Vape Day approaches, the organization is calling on governments to integrate real-world consumer experiences and household impacts into future tobacco and nicotine regulations.
