Hendersonville, Tennessee Passes New Vape Shop Zoning Rules
The Board of Aldermen in Hendersonville, Tennessee, has approved a new zoning ordinance amendment that significantly restricts where vape and smoke shops can operate. The measure is a direct response to concerns from residents about the increasing number of vape stores and marketing tactics perceived to be aimed at young people.
Under the new ordinance, vape and smoke shops are now prohibited from opening within 1,000 feet of several key locations, including public or private schools, day care centers, youth centers, and religious institutions. Additionally, the new rules bar minors from entering these specialty shops unless they are accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Alderman Michael Martin of Ward 2 explained that the change is intended to reduce youth exposure to vaping products, noting the high concentration of both schools and vape stores along the city’s Main Street. He stated that the community has shown broad support for the measure, expressing unhappiness with the current number of vape stores.
Existing vape shops will be grandfathered in and allowed to continue operating at their current locations. However, any new stores wishing to open will be required to comply with these new, stricter zoning restrictions. City officials noted that similar regulations have been adopted in other nearby areas, including Sumner County, as part of a broader effort to limit youth access to vaping products.
