Canary Islands Smoking & Vaping Rules: Tourist Guide
Tourists planning a holiday to the Canary Islands are being advised to check local regulations carefully, as smoking and vaping restrictions are tightening across the archipelago. While a comprehensive Spanish draft law is set to come into full force by 2026, many municipalities have already established “smoke-free” zones, particularly on beaches, which apply to traditional cigarettes as well as smokeless alternatives like vapes and heated tobacco products.
Currently, there are approximately 67 to 68 beaches in the Canary Islands where smoking and vaping are prohibited by municipal decision. According to the association Nofumadores, Gran Canaria leads with 49 smoke-free beaches, followed by Tenerife with 11 and Lanzarote with seven. While this places the Canary Islands third in Spain for the number of smoke-free beaches (behind Galicia and Cantabria), the restrictions are significant for visitors.
A spokesperson for One Sure Insurance warned British tourists, who often view smoking or vaping on terraces and beaches as part of their holiday routine, that these rules could come as a surprise. Under the upcoming draft Anti-Tobacco Law, restrictions will likely extend to banning consumption within 15 meters of public building entrances, healthcare centers, schools, museums, and playgrounds. Crucially, the new norms do not distinguish between traditional cigarettes and alternatives like vapes regarding these prohibited zones.
Travelers are urged to respect all signage in tourist complexes and public environments to avoid sanctions. Although exact fine amounts under the future law are yet to be confirmed, they are expected to be significant. Visitors should verify the specific status of their destination’s beaches and public spaces to ensure a hassle-free vacation.
