Christmas Travel Warning: Vaping Mistakes Could Cost £5,000
As millions prepare to jet off for Christmas and New Year breaks, experts are issuing an urgent warning to vapers: ignoring local regulations could turn your festive holiday into a financial nightmare. With global travel surging for the season, ignorance of shifting vaping laws is not a valid defense, and the penalties in some popular destinations are eye-watering.
Matthew Ma, a vaping industry expert, urges all travelers to research their destination before packing their bags. “Laws are constantly changing,” he warns. In some countries, the consequences are severe. Singapore and Thailand, for example, have banned vaping completely, meaning possession alone can lead to confiscation and legal trouble. But even in Europe, specific rules can catch you out. In Cyprus, vaping in a private vehicle with a child is illegal and carries a fine of up to €850 (approx. £744). Similarly, lighting up a vape in public spaces in Hungary could result in a staggering charge of nearly $1,000 (£732).
The risks start before you even land. Vaping on a plane is strictly prohibited worldwide. Being caught using a device onboard can lead to a fine of up to £5,000 and a potential lifetime ban from the airline. Furthermore, safety regulations dictate how you must pack your gear. Due to fire risks from lithium batteries, vape devices and batteries must be packed in your carry-on luggage, never in the hold. “This ensures they remain in a pressure-controlled environment,” Matthew explains, preventing the dangerous “thermal runaway” that can cause cargo fires.
To avoid ruining your Christmas break with a massive fine or a run-in with the law, the advice is simple: check the local rules, pack safely in your hand luggage, and never vape on the plane.
