Argentina Salta Province to Debate E-Cigarette Ban
The Chamber of Deputies in Salta Province, Argentina, is set to debate a bill this week that proposes to ban the sale, distribution, promotion, and consumption of electronic cigarettes and vaporizers. The initiative, presented by Deputy David Leiva, aims to amend Salta’s existing anti-tobacco law (Provincial Law No. 7631) to explicitly include these electronic devices.
The bill’s justification highlights concerns over the increasing popularity of e-cigarettes, especially among adolescents and young adults. It argues that while proponents claim these devices can aid smoking cessation, there is insufficient scientific evidence to support this. Instead, it warns that many e-cigarette users also continue to smoke traditional tobacco (“dual use”), increasing health risks. The proposal also emphasizes that e-cigarettes are not harmless, releasing nicotine and other toxic substances, with some models exceeding the nicotine levels of conventional cigarettes. Deputy Leiva stressed that allowing unregulated vaping would undermine achievements in combating tobacco addiction.
If approved, the reform would align Salta with stricter preventative public health measures by comprehensively prohibiting e-cigarettes and vaporizers within the province.
