Basel Grand Council Proposes Ban on Disposable E-Cigarettes
The Basel Grand Council has submitted a proposal to the government to ban the sale of disposable e-cigarettes in Basel-Stadt. The government expressed its willingness to accept the order, but only in a less binding form, arguing that a cantonal ban would violate higher-ranking federal law.
Despite this, the parliaments of Valais and Jura have already passed similar bans, while a nationwide ban is also being discussed at the federal level. The Basel government intends to monitor developments at the federal level for the time being.
The proposal, originally submitted as a motion by EPP Grand Councillor Christoph Hochuli, was passed by the Council with 62 votes in favor, 28 against, and one abstention. As the debate continues, the future of disposable e-cigarettes in Basel and across Switzerland remains uncertain, with public health concerns and legal considerations shaping the discourse.
