Belarus Considers Ban on E-Cigarette Advertising and Online Sales
Belarusian senators are considering a ban on the advertising of electronic cigarettes and other stricter regulations to combat the growing use of vapes, particularly among youth. The potential measures were discussed at a special meeting chaired by Natalya Kochanova, Head of the Council of the Republic (the upper house of parliament).
The meeting, titled “On improving the legal regulation of the circulation and use of electronic smoking systems and liquids for them,” was prompted by numerous public appeals to ban vaping and protect children. Kochanova stated that the time has come for proper legal regulation in this area.
Officials at the meeting countered the perception that e-cigarettes are a safer alternative to traditional smoking, highlighting that vape liquids contain nicotine, formaldehyde, and carcinogens. They noted potential health consequences including loss of concentration, increased anxiety, DNA damage, and heightened risks of cancer, heart attack, and depression.
Specific proposals discussed included a ban on advertising, a prohibition on the open display of e-cigarettes and liquids in stores, and a ban on internet sales. The meeting concluded with participants committing to take all necessary measures to “comprehensively resolve this problem,” signaling a strong political will to tighten controls on the e-cigarette market to protect public health, especially for young people.
