Belgium to Ban All Vape Flavors Except Tobacco
Belgium is set to prohibit the sale of all e-cigarette flavors other than tobacco, Health Minister Frank Vandenbroucke announced on Wednesday. This decision follows updated recommendations from the Superior Health Council, which now prioritizes protecting young people from nicotine addiction over the potential benefits of flavors for adult smokers.
Minister Vandenbroucke argued that flavored vapes are deliberately designed to appeal to children and mask the harms of vaping. He cited the success of a similar ban in the Netherlands, where nearly 30% of users reported vaping less. The move addresses alarming statistics: recent surveys indicate that almost one-third of Belgian school pupils have tried e-cigarettes, with weekly usage rates quadrupling over the past five years.
While the Superior Health Council had previously hesitated on a full ban, it now advocates for stricter limits. However, retailer association Perstablo condemned the proposal as “absurd,” warning it could fuel an illegal market and pledging to explore legal challenges. The government aims to implement the ban “as soon as possible,” building on previous measures like the prohibition of disposable vapes and smoking restrictions in youth-frequented areas.
