Argentina: Buenos Aires Lawmakers Propose Total Ban on Vapes
Lawmakers in the Buenos Aires Province Legislature have introduced a bill to ban the sale, distribution, and promotion of e-cigarettes and vapes. This legislative push responds directly to growing health concerns over rising vape consumption among local teens and young adults.
The proposed ban targets the aggressive marketing strategies of vape brands, which frequently use sweet, fruit, or mint flavors and eye-catching designs to attract younger demographics. Sponsors of the bill warn that these tactics encourage early nicotine addiction and mislead youth regarding the safety of these devices.
Although Argentina’s national health regulator, ANMAT, already prohibits the importation, distribution, and advertising of e-cigarettes, an informal market continues to thrive online and via social media. The Buenos Aires bill aims to close these loopholes by establishing provincial-level enforcement, including business closures, product seizures, and heavy fines.
Additionally, the initiative mandates public awareness campaigns to educate youth on the hidden dangers of vaping. Many young users remain unaware that these devices contain nicotine and other harmful chemicals linked to respiratory and cardiovascular issues. The bill will now be debated in legislative committees, sparking discussions among health specialists, merchants, and anti-smoking advocates.
