Chicago CBP Officers Seize Over 43,000 Illicit Vaping Products
U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers in Chicago have seized a significant shipment of illicit vaping products, totaling 43,200 pieces, for violating the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic (FD&C) Act. The shipment, which originated from China, was destined for an address in Mississippi.
The discovery was made at Chicago’s Central Examination Station, where officers inspected the shipment and found 144 unmanifested cartons of Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems (ENDS). CBP and FDA personnel determined the products, all identified as Kangvape Onee Stick brand, lacked the required FDA marketing authorization. The shipment was also found to be grossly undervalued in an apparent attempt to avoid duties and regulatory scrutiny, with a total domestic value exceeding $358,000.
LaFonda D. Sutton-Burke, Director of Field Operations for the Chicago Field Office, emphasized the agency’s commitment to intercepting such shipments to protect public health. “We will continue to work with our consumer product safety partners to identify and seize unsafe and illicit goods,” she stated.
The seizure highlights the vast number of unauthorized e-cigarettes entering the U.S. market. To date, the FDA has only authorized 39 e-cigarette products and devices for legal sale. The seized merchandise will be turned over for final disposition.
