Bloomberg Donates $2.2M to Uphold Denver’s Flavored Tobacco Ban
Billionaire and former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg has injected another $2.2 million into the campaign to save Denver’s ban on flavored tobacco and nicotine products, according to a new campaign finance report. This latest contribution, made in the final weeks of October ahead of the election, brings his total donations to the “Denver Kids vs Big Tobacco” campaign to just under $5 million.
The massive financial backing from Bloomberg, a staunch opponent of the tobacco industry, has created a significant disparity in the race. The pro-ban campaign has now raised a total of $5.8 million, dwarfing the main opposition group, “Citizen Power!”, by a nearly 9-to-1 margin. “Citizen Power!” has raised approximately $646,000, primarily from tobacco companies and vape store advocates.
The battle is over Denver’s Referendum 310, which asks voters whether to retain a city ordinance passed last year that bans the sale of most flavored tobacco products, including flavored vapes and menthol cigarettes. Due to the way the referendum is worded, a “yes” vote keeps the ban in place, while a “no” vote would repeal it.
Supporters of the ban argue it is essential to prevent underage youth from being lured into a lifetime of nicotine addiction through appealing flavors. Opponents, including the petitioners who placed the measure on the ballot, contend the prohibition harms independent retailers, reduces city tax revenue, and infringes upon the choices of adult consumers. The significant influx of cash from Bloomberg ensures the pro-ban campaign can dominate the airwaves with TV ads in the final stretch before voters decide the issue.
