Detroit Bans Smokeless Tobacco and Nicotine Pouches at Pro Sports Stadiums
The Detroit City Council has approved a new ordinance prohibiting the use of all smokeless tobacco products, including chewing tobacco and nicotine pouches, within the city’s professional sports stadiums. The measure, which passed in a 7-2 vote and takes immediate effect, makes non-compliant use a misdemeanor offense punishable by a $100 fine, though offenders will first be given a chance to stop without penalty.
This move makes Comerica Park, home of the Detroit Tigers, the 18th Major League Baseball stadium to become completely tobacco-free. The effort is part of a national “Knock Tobacco Out of the Park” campaign aimed at preventing players from using smokeless tobacco in front of young, impressionable fans. A coalition of health organizations, including the American Cancer Society and the Keep MI Kids Tobacco-Free Alliance, supported the ban, stating, “This policy will send a simple and powerful message to kids: baseball and tobacco don’t mix.”
While some reports initially suggested vaping was included, the final ordinance language focuses on smokeless tobacco. However, existing venue policies at Comerica Park, Ford Field (Detroit Lions), and Little Caesars Arena (Pistons and Red Wings) already prohibit the use of e-cigarettes and vapes. Council members who opposed the new smokeless tobacco ordinance questioned its enforcement and argued it was an overreach, while supporters like Councilwoman Angela Whitfield Calloway emphasized the need to combat an “epidemic” of nicotine use among youth.
