German Health Politicians Urge Disposable Vape & Flavor Ban
Health policymakers in Germany are calling for an early ban on disposable e-cigarettes and advocating for more comprehensive measures to curb youth vaping, including a ban on flavored products. Hendrik Streeck (CDU), the German Federal Government’s Drug Commissioner, told the “Rheinische Post” that while an EU-wide ban on disposables is correct, it is likely “only a drop in the ocean” as many manufacturers are already shifting to products with replaceable batteries.
Streeck expressed great concern that “children and adolescents are being deliberately introduced to nicotine consumption with vapes and flavors like watermelon or cola.” He argued that a flavor ban, similar to those in Denmark or the Netherlands, would be a “sensible step toward reducing the attractiveness of e-cigarettes, especially for young people,” and should be implemented quickly. He also called for more consistent enforcement of existing regulations and greater investment in prevention and education.
Simone Borchardt (CDU), the health policy spokesperson for the CDU/CSU parliamentary group, agreed that a ban on disposable vaping devices was “sensible and understandable.” She welcomed the EU’s intention to prohibit these products, stating, “It is right that Germany supports this step and is clearly positioning itself for health and environmental protection.” Borchardt also emphasized the need for education, noting that flavored versions give the false impression that vaping is harmless.
