Hampton City Council to Regulate Vape Shop Locations
Hampton City Council has unanimously voted to instruct city staff to develop proposals for regulating the placement of new vape shops. This initiative aims to protect the general health and welfare of residents and implement “good zoning practice” to prevent clustering of these businesses.
The proposed regulations may prohibit new retail tobacco and hemp product sales within 1,000 feet of schools or child daycares. It remains unclear how these rules would affect existing vape shops near such facilities. The council acknowledged the recent growth in vape popularity but noted the lack of data on current vape shop numbers in Hampton.
This decision follows similar actions by Newport News City Council in September, which restricted new vape stores from operating within 2,000 feet of schools or child day centers. Residents have expressed concerns about the density of vape shops, particularly in popular areas like Buckroe Beach. City staff will present an amendment to the Planning Commission, which, if approved, will then go before the City Council for a final vote. Dates for these votes have not yet been set.
