Iowa City Launches Free Nicotine Vape Disposal Program
The Iowa City Landfill and Recycling Center will officially begin accepting nicotine vape devices at its hazardous materials collection facility on Thursday, April 23. This new initiative addresses the growing safety risks associated with improperly discarded e-cigarettes, specifically the threat of fires sparked by lithium-ion batteries and toxic nicotine leaks in regular waste streams.
The free drop-off service is exclusively available to residents of Johnson County, Kalona, and Riverside during specific weekly hours: Thursdays and Fridays (7 a.m. to 2 p.m.) and Saturdays (7 a.m. to noon).
To ensure safe processing, officials have outlined strict disposal guidelines:
- Keep devices intact: Do not attempt to disassemble the vapes.
- Contain leaks: Any leaking device must be placed in a small, sealed plastic bag prior to drop-off.
- Avoid standard bins: Vapes must never be placed in household trash, recycling bins, or standard battery drop-off locations.
Businesses, schools, and nonprofits are also eligible to use the facility but must register and schedule an appointment in advance by calling 319-887-6112 or emailing [email protected]. Commercial drop-offs may be subject to fees and quantity limits.
