Macau Moves Closer to Total Public Vape Ban as New Bill Advances
Macau’s Legislative Assembly has unanimously passed the first reading of a bill proposing a total ban on the possession and use of electronic cigarettes in public spaces. This legislative push aligns Macau with regional neighbors like Hong Kong and Singapore in adopting zero-tolerance vaping policies to protect public health.
The new regulations build upon Macau’s existing restrictions, which already outlaw the sale, distribution, import, and export of alternative tobacco products. Once the bill is fully enacted, individuals will only be legally permitted to use vaporizers within private homes.
In addition to targeting e-cigarettes, the bill introduces a mandatory 10-meter smoke-free buffer zone around key public facilities, including:
- Primary and secondary schools
- Hospitals and community health centers
- Daycare centers, nurseries, and childcare facilities
To ensure safety and boost enforcement efficiency, Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture O Lam confirmed that health inspectors will be equipped with portable body cameras during inspections. The bill now moves to the assembly’s Third Standing Committee for detailed review before its final vote.
