Malta: 26% of 15-16 Year Olds Have Tried Vaping – Report
A new report has found that approximately one in four (26%) teenagers aged 15 to 16 in Malta and Gozo have tried e-cigarettes. The data, from the European School Survey Project on Alcohol and other Drugs (ESPAD), also revealed that 16% of these youths have smoked traditional cigarettes. These findings were discussed at a conference organized by the Foundation for Social Welfare Services (FSWS).
The survey, conducted last year with a sample of 2,880 students across Malta and Gozo, indicates that over 700 students from this group had experimented with e-cigarettes. In contrast, the same survey found that 74% of these adolescents reported never having consumed alcohol.
Michael Falzon, the Minister for Social Policy and Children’s Rights, addressed the trends, emphasizing the government’s continuous investment in school-based awareness campaigns to educate students about the negative consequences of addiction. “We must continue to show that addictions are not a solution, rather they are just a negative cycle that prevents a person from functioning,” Minister Falzon stressed, reaffirming the commitment to strengthening prevention from a young age.
The ESPAD study, which has been conducted every four years since 1995, is a significant international project that looks into the behaviors and attitudes of 15-16-year-old students regarding various substances and digital activities. The latest report marks the 30th year of the study, which involved a total of 113,882 anonymous student participants from 37 different countries.
