New Zealand to Ban Vaping in Bars and Workplaces
Associate Minister of Health Jenny Salesa has announced that New Zealand will amend its Smoke-free Environments Act 1990 next year to regulate vaping and smokeless tobacco. This legislative shift aims to balance supporting smokers transitioning to safer alternatives with protecting youth and non-smokers from secondhand exposure.
Although the government recognizes vaping as a significantly less harmful and more affordable tool for smoking cessation, Salesa emphasized that it is not entirely risk-free. The proposed changes seek to establish a safer, regulated market while preventing a new generation from picking up the habit.
The upcoming legislative amendments will introduce several key regulatory changes:
- Expanded Scope:Â The law will officially cover both nicotine and nicotine-free vaping liquids, as well as vaping devices and components.
- Safety Standards:Â New safety requirements and a product notification system will be established to quickly address safety concerns.
- Zoning Restrictions:Â Clear boundaries will be set on where vaping is permitted, outlawing it in schools, cafes, bars, and offices.
- Specialist Exemptions:Â Vaping will remain permitted inside specialist R18 retail outlets to accommodate adult smokers.
The public will have an opportunity to provide feedback on the proposed regulations when a select committee calls for submissions next year, ensuring community input before the laws are finalized.
