New Hampshire Bill Proposes Smoking & Vaping Ban at Hampton Beach State Park
A new bill introduced in New Hampshire, Senate Bill 596, aims to ban smoking and vaping throughout Hampton Beach State Park, including its RV park. If passed, the ban would take effect on January 1, 2027. While the legislation does not currently propose fines for violators, authorized officials would be directed to stop individuals from smoking.
State Senator Debra Altschiller filed the bill after a constituent complained about exposure to secondhand smoke while visiting the beach with her child. The constituent was surprised to learn that smoking was not already prohibited. Altschiller emphasized the health risks of secondhand smoke, citing World Health Organization data on its link to cardiovascular and respiratory diseases. She hopes the bill will clarify rules through signage and education, fostering a culture change similar to anti-littering campaigns. Community feedback has reportedly been positive, with many residents unaware that smoking was currently permitted in these popular public spaces.
