Russia Approves Law to Block Online Tobacco Sales Sites
The Russian Federation Council has approved a law allowing for the extrajudicial blocking of websites that sell tobacco and nicotine-containing products online. This measure, passed during a plenary session, also extends to sites offering hookahs and devices like IQOS.
The legislation amends the law “On Information, Information Technologies and Information Protection.” Under the new rules, internet resources advertising the remote sale of these products can be blocked without a court decision and will be added to the registry of prohibited information in Russia. Additionally, website owners will be obligated to monitor their platforms for such offers.
Proponents of the bill note that similar measures are already effectively applied to online alcohol sales, helping to curb illegal trade, including on marketplaces. If signed by the President, the law is set to come into force on March 1, 2026.
