Switzerland Considers 500-Franc Fine for Vaping on Train Platforms
The Swiss Association for Tobacco Prevention is demanding stricter enforcement and a 500-franc fine for unauthorized vaping at railway stations. This aggressive push targets passengers ignoring current rules, which has prompted a surge in complaints regarding e-cigarette use outside designated smoking areas on SBB train platforms.
Currently, Swiss railway regulations restrict both traditional smoking and vaping to a strict two-meter radius around designated ashtrays. However, widespread non-compliance has led to uncontrolled tobacco and vape use in public transit spaces.
Association Director Luciano Ruggia argues that a lack of visual clarity fuels this issue. To combat the problem and enforce compliance, the association is proposing several immediate measures:
- Imposing a strict 500-franc fine for violators as a necessary deterrent.
- Expanding the explicit ban to cover all other platform areas and the interior of trains.
- Installing clearer signage and distinct floor markings that specifically include e-cigarette symbols alongside traditional cigarettes.
Ruggia emphasized that implementing these financial penalties and visual updates is a reasonable and necessary step to ensure passengers comply with railway regulations.
