Tasmania Passes Strict New Laws Against Illegal Vapes and Tobacco
The Tasmanian House of Assembly has passed a stringent new bill introducing severe penalties and business closure powers to combat the illicit trade of tobacco and vaping products.
- New Offenses: The legislation creates stricter penalties for the sale and supply of illegal smoking products.
- Youth Protection: The crackdown specifically targets illicit sellers who deliberately market their products to teenagers.
- Organized Crime: Authorities aim to prevent mainland-style gang violence and firebombings associated with the illegal tobacco trade from entering Tasmania.
The Tasmanian House of Assembly has officially passed the Public Health Amendment (Prohibited Tobacco and Other Products) Bill 2026. This legislative crackdown grants authorities unprecedented powers to immediately shut down businesses found selling illegal tobacco and vapes.
Health Minister Bridget Archer welcomed the bill’s passage, noting that illicit products severely undermine state efforts to reduce nicotine addiction. She emphasized that these illegal markets often utilize tactics that deliberately target young Tasmanians.
Beyond public health, the new laws address growing security concerns. Police Minister Felix Ellis highlighted the direct link between illegal tobacco and organized crime networks operating across Australia.
“We will not allow the firebombings and intimidation tactics seen on the mainland to take hold in our State,” Minister Ellis stated, framing the tougher powers as a strong deterrent against criminal gangs.
The Public Health Amendment Bill 2026 will now proceed to the Legislative Council for further consideration.
