UK Vape Retailer VPZ Slams UK Government “Hypocrisy”
UK vape retailer VPZ has accused the government of hypocrisy following the emergence of newspaper photographs showing Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner vaping, while the government simultaneously presses forward with proposals for tighter restrictions on the UK vaping industry. VPZ argues that this highlights a stark contradiction in government policy.
“Angela Rayner herself has chosen vaping as an alternative to smoking, which we fully support,” VPZ stated. “However, Labour’s proposals threaten to restrict access to these products for millions of adult smokers across the UK who are trying to quit.”
The government has outlined plans for new curbs on flavors, packaging, and marketing of vaping products. While intended to address concerns about youth vaping, VPZ fears these measures risk creating unintended consequences that could undermine the UK’s progress in reducing smoking rates by pushing many people back towards more harmful cigarettes.
Jamie Strachan, Operations Director at VPZ, said, “If vaping, in its current form, is good enough for Angela Rayner, it’s good enough for millions of other adults who are trying to ditch cigarettes.” He argued that restricting flavors and packaging will do little to address youth access but will instead “punish adult smokers, stifle legitimate businesses, and fuel the growth of the black market.”
VPZ emphasized that it has consistently supported proportionate regulation, including stricter enforcement against underage sales, tougher penalties for non-compliant retailers, and a licensing scheme for specialist stores. The retailer expressed concerns that heavy-handed restrictions could damage legitimate businesses that support thousands of jobs and play a key role in reducing the burden of smoking-related illnesses on the NHS.
The company is calling for a balanced, evidence-based approach to regulation that protects young people while safeguarding access and choice for adult smokers who want to quit. “The UK has led the way in public health by embracing vaping as a solution to smoking,” Strachan concluded. “We are calling on the government to adopt an evidence-based approach that protects young people while ensuring adults continue to have access to the products they need to quit cigarettes for good.”
