Arlington, Texas Expands Indoor Smoking Ban to Include Vapes
The Arlington City Council has unanimously approved an expansion of its smoke-free ordinance to prohibit vaping and e-cigarettes in all indoor public places. This decisive action closes a long-standing loophole, aligning the city with over 90 Texas municipalities in a broader push to reduce secondhand aerosol exposure.
Advocated by the American Heart Association (AHA), the updated rules are already in effect. The AHA notes that aerosols from e-cigarettes contain fine particles and heavy metals that exacerbate lung and heart diseases. In Texas alone, tobacco-related illnesses claim approximately 28,000 lives annually and generate over $10.29 billion in healthcare costs.
This unanimous vote marks a significant shift from Arlington’s previous legislative stance. In May 2017, the city expanded its smoking ban to cover bars, nightclubs, and bowling alleys to earn a “100 Percent Smoke-Free City” designation from the World Health Organization. However, during those 2017 negotiations, the council specifically removed e-cigarettes from the prohibited list.
| Policy Feature | 2017 Ordinance | Updated Ordinance (Current) |
|---|---|---|
| Traditional Smoking | Banned indoors | Banned indoors |
| E-Cigarettes / Vapes | Exempted | Banned indoors |
| Business Violation Fine | Up to $2,000 | Up to $2,000 |
“Arlington is proving that clean indoor air is a basic right—not a luxury,” stated Alisa Sandmann, Community Advocacy Director for the AHA. By integrating vapes into the existing framework, city leaders hope to improve overall public health and create safer environments for workers and visitors alike.
