San Francisco Considers Banning Smoking on Bar Patios
A San Francisco city committee will vote on May 18 to potentially eliminate the legal exception allowing smoking on bar patios. This proposal, sponsored by Supervisor Myrna Melgar and backed by major medical groups, has triggered intense debate as local bar owners warn of severe economic consequences.
The proposed ordinance aims to align San Francisco with over 50 other Bay Area cities that have already implemented similar outdoor smoking bans. It builds upon a 2014 law that prohibited smoking on restaurant patios but temporarily exempted bars and taverns.
Public health experts, including Dr. John Maa of the San Francisco Marin Medical Society, strongly support the measure. They emphasize that outdoor secondhand smoke still poses significant risks for heart disease, stroke, and cancer to both hospitality employees and patrons.
However, the proposal faces fierce opposition from the local hospitality industry. An online petition against the ban has garnered over 2,000 signatures from small business owners and residents who argue the legislation is misguided in its current timing and scope.
Lex Montiel, owner of the historic LGBTQ+ leather bar San Francisco Eagle, highlighted the potential unintended consequences. He noted that forcing patrons to smoke on the street compromises the safe, inclusive environment his covered patio provides, potentially driving away crucial business during a fragile post-COVID recovery.
Despite receiving toxic and threatening messages regarding the controversial proposal, Supervisor Melgar maintains that the health risks of secondhand smoke are undeniable. The bill requires approval from at least two committee members to advance.
