Germany: Bavaria Plans Ban on Indoor Vaping & Shishas
The Bavarian CSU parliamentary group is planning a significant tightening of non-smoker protection laws, aiming to regulate e-cigarettes and shishas as strictly as traditional tobacco cigarettes. This move would effectively ban their use in many public indoor spaces, including restaurants, bars, schools, hospitals, sports facilities, and airports.
The proposal seeks to amend Bavaria’s Health Protection Act to close what is seen as a “loophole” or “gray area” for these products. Currently, smoking bans in these locations apply to tobacco cigarettes, but e-cigarettes have not been subject to the same comprehensive restrictions. Cannabis vaporizers are already legally equated with tobacco cigarettes in the state.
CSU parliamentary group leader Klaus Holetschek stated, “Health protection must not have gaps. E-cigarettes and heated tobacco products are not harmless lifestyle products but can be an entry point into nicotine addiction and release harmful substances – also for third parties.” The initiative has received support from the Green party, which also calls for better youth protection measures.
