Belarus Plans Stricter Licensing for E-Cigarette Sales with Presidential Support
Belarus is set to toughen the licensing requirements for the trade of electronic cigarettes and related mixtures at the legislative level. The draft law was reviewed during a meeting between President Alexander Lukashenko and the Council of Ministers leadership.
President Lukashenko highlighted the growing concern among medical professionals regarding the popularity of e-cigarettes among youth, noting increasing calls for restrictions or even total bans. However, he also cautioned against inadvertently creating a black market, referencing the open borders with Russia where such products are already prevalent. “Will we not form some kind of underground trade?” he asked, emphasizing the need for a balanced decision.
While expressing his personal opposition to both alcohol and smoking, describing smoking as “ruining one’s health” and a primary cause of lung cancer, Lukashenko stressed the importance of expert input. “We will try to find a balance. Let’s discuss and make… the appropriate decision,” he concluded. The move aims to address public health concerns while navigating the complexities of cross-border trade and market regulation.
