Belarus to Tighten Anti-Tobacco Laws, Targeting Vapes and Youth Smoking
The Belarusian Republican Center for Hygiene, Epidemiology, and Public Health has confirmed that the government is drafting amendments to significantly tighten its anti-tobacco laws. This regulatory push targets both traditional cigarettes and alternative nicotine products, such as vapes and heated tobacco systems, amid rising youth usage.
While Belarus already bans nicotine sales to individuals under 18, the new bill introduces legal liability for adults who purchase these products for minors. Additionally, the state plans to impose stricter manufacturing and distribution standards on alternative smoking devices, which have surged in popularity among teenagers.
The draft legislation also aims to expand smoke-free environments. Under the new rules, smoking will be prohibited near the entrances and porches of apartment buildings and dormitories, making a common neighborhood habit a legal violation.
This domestic crackdown occurs alongside ongoing efforts within the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) to establish unified nicotine regulations. Belarus’s neighbors are adopting increasingly hostile stances toward vaping; Kazakhstan has already enacted a total ban on electronic smoking systems, while Russia and Kyrgyzstan are moving toward similar prohibitions.
