Switzerland: Geneva Canton Bans Disposable E-Cigarettes
The canton of Geneva, Switzerland, has banned the sale of disposable e-cigarettes, also known as “Puff Bars,” with the new law taking immediate effect. The Grand Council (cantonal parliament) passed the legislation nearly unanimously on Friday, invoking an emergency clause.
Lawmakers condemned the harmful effects of these single-use vapes on both public health and the environment. SP Grand Councilor Jennifer Conti described the products as a “disgrace,” designed to appeal to young people. The devices, popular with youth and available in Switzerland for about five years, were criticized for their addictive potential and the environmental damage caused by their disposal.
Geneva joins several other Swiss cantons, including Valais, Bern, and Jura, that have already enacted similar bans. This local action comes as a nationwide ban is also planned. The Swiss Federal Councils (National Council and Council of States) have both approved a motion to prohibit disposable vapes across the country. The Federal Council must now amend the Tobacco Products Act to implement this national ban. Rechargeable e-cigarettes will remain exempt.
