Indonesia to Block Tobacco and Vape Ads on Social Media
Indonesia’s Ministry of Communication and Informatics (Kemkomdigi) has announced it is prepared to block content related to tobacco and vape advertising on social media, acting on official complaints from the Ministry of Health (Kemenkes). This move aims to protect children from exposure to the promotion of tobacco and e-cigarette products.
The action is regulated under Government Regulation (PP) No. 28 of 2024. “Kemkomdigi can only take firm action in the form of cutting off access or blocking cigarette ads on social media based on a complaint from the Ministry of Health,” explained Mediodecci Lustarini, Secretary of Kemkomdigi’s Directorate General of Digital Space Supervision.
This collaboration follows a formal complaint to the Health Ministry from a civil society coalition, which found 26 influencer accounts with a combined 24.1 million followers promoting e-cigarettes on Instagram and YouTube between May and July 2025. Dr. Siti Nadia Tarmizi of the Health Ministry confirmed they will coordinate with Kemkomdigi and the social media platforms where violations occur. A joint task force for supervising digital tobacco and e-cigarette advertising is currently being formalized to strengthen these efforts.
