Malaysia: Kedah Seized RM16 Million in Illegal Vape Products
The Royal Malaysian Customs Department has seized over RM16 million worth of electronic cigarettes (vapes), devices, and liquids following a raid on a warehouse in Padang Besar, Kedah. State Customs Director Wan Marini Wan Hamzah reported that the operation, conducted on October 13, uncovered a massive haul of 719,250 units.
The seizure included 211,050 vape devices and 508,200 units of vape liquids, with an estimated value of nearly RM13 million and unpaid duties and taxes totaling over RM3 million. A suspect in his 40s was unable to provide valid import permits from the Health Ministry. Wan Marini noted that vape liquid is a controlled import requiring specific ministry approval.
Investigations revealed the products originated from China, arriving via Kuala Lumpur International Airport before being transported by land to Perlis. Authorities are determining if the goods were intended for the local market or re-export. The case is being investigated under the Customs Act 1967, as the department vows to tighten monitoring at all national gateways to curb smuggling.
