Malaysia to Impose “Pro-Health Tax” on Vape and Tobacco Products
Malaysia will expand its “pro-health tax” to include all tobacco and vape products, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced. The tax, previously only imposed on sugary beverages, is being extended as part of the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP).
When tabling the 13MP, Anwar emphasized that the measure’s primary goal is not just to increase tax revenue but to address significant health risks. “It is to encourage behavioural changes and curb the worrying rise of non-communicable diseases,” he stated. This new tax will apply to both traditional cigarettes and electronic cigarettes (vapes), reflecting the government’s growing concern over the use of all nicotine products.
