Newport News Approves Stricter Regulations for New Vape Shops
The Newport News City Council has approved new regulations for vape shops, establishing stricter standards for new businesses in the city. The amendment to the zoning ordinance, passed on Tuesday, is aimed at protecting children and families from the proliferation of these establishments.
“This ordinance is about protecting our children and families, not punishing responsible businesses,” stated Mayor Phillip Jones. “We have heard the concerns of our residents, and this action ensures that new vape shops will meet strong community-driven standards.”
The new regulations define a vape shop as any business where 20% or more of its retail inventory, display space, or sales revenue is related to e-cigarettes or vape products. Key restrictions for new vape shops include:
- They must be located at least 2,000 feet away from schools and childcare centers.
- Operating hours are limited to 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
- Drive-thru services are prohibited.
- Windows cannot be smoked or mirrored.
- They are only permitted to operate in the General Commercial zoning district.
Vape shops currently in operation are grandfathered in and allowed to continue as they are. However, if an existing shop closes for two years or more, it must comply with the new regulations upon reopening. The new ordinance is the result of a months-long process involving public input and recommendations from the Planning Commission.
