Brazil: Ponta Grossa Bans on E-Cigarette Sales and Use
The Brazilian city of Ponta Grossa has sanctioned a new law (n°15.681/2025) that will prohibit the sale, commercialization, and use of electronic cigarettes (vapes). The legislation, based on a bill by author Julio Küller (MDB) and signed by Mayor Elizabeth Schmidt on Wednesday (Nov 12), will take effect 90 days after its official publication.
The ban on use is comprehensive, applying to a wide range of public and private-access enclosed spaces. This includes public areas like squares, leisure areas, gyms, schools, and libraries, as well as privately-owned establishments such as cinemas, hotels, supermarkets, snack bars, and bars. The law also mandates that primary and secondary schools must display signs or posters informing about the prohibition.
To ensure compliance, the legislation outlines several control measures, including identifying critical use areas like schools and businesses, conducting joint inspection operations to seize products and fine violators, and monitoring deliveries made by couriers and apps. Mayor Elizabeth Schmidt stated the law serves to “reinforce the defense of the population’s health.” Küller, the bill’s author, expressed a “feeling of duty fulfilled,” highlighting that the initiative aims to strengthen municipal law to protect children and adolescents and will be supported by educational campaigns.
