Brazil: São Luís to Revoke Licenses of Vape Sellers
The Municipal Chamber of São Luís, Brazil, has approved a new bill that imposes severe penalties on establishments selling electronic cigarettes and similar devices. Under the proposal, introduced by Councilor Marcelo Poeta (PSB), businesses caught selling products such as “vapers,” “vapes,” “pod systems,” and “vaper pens” will have their operating licenses immediately revoked, preventing them from continuing their activities in the municipality.
Councilor Poeta argued that the measure is necessary to increase enforcement and restrict access to these devices, which are increasingly popular among young people despite potential health risks highlighted by medical and health surveillance bodies. The legislation aims to reinforce the fight against the irregular trade of these products by creating a strong deterrent for formal businesses.
This local initiative supports a nationwide prohibition on e-cigarettes already in place by Brazil’s National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa). The bill now awaits sanction by the municipal executive to officially become law, after which the city will be responsible for regulating the application of penalties and ensuring inspections at points of sale.
