SNP Pledges to Ban Vape Displays in Scottish Shops if Re-elected
The Scottish National Party (SNP) plans to ban the retail display of vaping products, treating them like tobacco, if they secure a fifth term in government this May.
- Display Ban:Â Vapes will be hidden from public view to prevent colorful packaging from enticing children.
- Legislative Power:Â The ban will utilize new regulatory powers granted by the UK-wide Tobacco and Vapes Bill.
- Zoning Restrictions:Â Officials are also considering planning law changes to restrict vape shop locations near key transport hubs.
Health Secretary Neil Gray has confirmed that the Scottish National Party (SNP) will ban in-store vape displays if re-elected in May. This move, aimed at curbing youth addiction, will force retailers to hide nicotine products from public view, aligning vape regulations with existing tobacco display laws.
The proposed ban addresses growing concerns that bright packaging and sweet flavors act as direct enticements to minors. According to the SNP, nearly one in five young people in Scotland have tried vaping, causing significant distractions in classrooms.
To enact this policy, the Scottish Government will utilize additional powers granted by the Westminster Tobacco and Vapes Bill. This upcoming manifesto pledge builds on Scotland’s increasingly strict stance on vaping regulation, which already includes:
- Single-Use Bans:Â A ban on disposable vapes implemented last June due to severe environmental impact, following reports of 26 million vapes discarded in 2023.
- Advertising Limits:Â Treating nicotine pouches and vapes with the same strict advertising restrictions as traditional cigarettes.
Beyond retail displays, First Minister John Swinney is exploring changes to commercial planning laws. Following a severe fire at a Union Street vape shop that forced the closure of Glasgow Central station for over a week, the government may restrict the proximity of vaping establishments to key transport hubs.
