Malaysia: Selangor Drafts Policy for Potential Vape Ban
The Selangor state government is currently drafting a comprehensive policy paper to regulate electronic cigarette products, which includes the potential for a gradual ban on vape usage. State Public Health and Environment Committee Chairman Jamaliah Jamaluddin announced this during a state assembly sitting, stating the policy will align with the federal Tobacco Product Control Act for Public Health 2023 (Act 852).
Jamaliah emphasized that the new policy will consider market realities, public health impacts, and the necessity for strengthened enforcement through cooperation between state, local, and federal agencies. Initial steps have already been taken, including the removal of vape-related advertisements and promotional signage across the state.
The government is also planning extensive advocacy programs targeting secondary school and university students to raise awareness about the health risks of vaping. These campaigns will include interactive sessions and lifestyle-based education. Furthermore, health clinics will be equipped with support hotlines and nicotine addiction screening services to assist individuals wishing to quit.
